How to Spot Fake Products When Shopping Online in Pakistan

Why this question comes up so often

Online shopping in Pakistan has a trust problem, and it is a reasonable one. Most people ordering online here have either been sent something that did not match the pictures, or know someone who has. The usual advice — "only buy from big websites" — is not very useful, because plenty of genuine small stores sell things the big marketplaces do not carry.

What follows is what actually distinguishes a real store from a risky one. None of it requires any special knowledge.

1. Look for a phone number that a person answers

This is the fastest test there is. A store willing to publish a working phone number is a store that expects to hear from you when something goes wrong.

Call it before you order. If it rings and a human answers, that tells you more than any trust badge on the page. If the only contact is a web form, be careful.

2. Read the return policy, and check it has a time limit

A real return policy says what you can return, within how many days, and what to do. A vague promise of "100% satisfaction guaranteed" with no timeframe is not a policy.

Look for the specifics: how long you have, what condition the item needs to be in, and how to start the process. Note that some things genuinely cannot be returned anywhere — perishables, made-to-order items, intimate apparel, and anything whose seal has been broken. A store that is honest about those exceptions is usually more trustworthy than one promising to take anything back.

3. Check whether the photographs are real

Fake listings reuse the manufacturer's stock images, often the same ones across a dozen different websites. A store that has actually handled the product tends to show it from several angles.

A quick test: save the main image and run it through Google Images. If the identical photograph appears on fifty other sites, nobody in that chain necessarily has the product in hand.

4. See whether the description says anything specific

This is the one most people skip, and it is the most reliable.

Genuine product pages state facts: size in millilitres or grams, material, what is in the box, shade or colour options, dimensions. Fake or careless listings fill the space with adjectives instead — "premium quality", "amazing results", "best in Pakistan" — because whoever wrote it has never seen the item.

Be especially careful with skincare and supplements. If a page promises that a cream "erases wrinkles" or a capsule "guarantees whitening", that is a claim no honest seller in Pakistan can make. DRAP regulates health claims here, and a seller confident enough to ignore that rule is telling you something about how they operate.

5. Use cash on delivery, but understand what it does

Cash on delivery is the strongest protection available to a Pakistani shopper, and it is why it remains the dominant payment method. You are not out of pocket until the parcel reaches you. If it never arrives, you have lost nothing.

But be clear about its limits. Cash on delivery protects you from a store that takes your money and disappears. It does not let you open the box and inspect the contents before paying — most couriers will not wait. So it protects against the worst outcome, not against a disappointing one. That is why the first four checks still matter.

Also check the delivery charge before you order rather than at the door. A store should show shipping at checkout, not surprise you with it on arrival.

6. Be suspicious of prices that are too far below everyone else

If a branded item is selling at a third of what every other store charges, the likely explanations are that it is counterfeit, expired, or the listing does not exist. This is particularly common with imported cosmetics and electronics.

A modest discount is normal. A price that makes no commercial sense is a warning.

7. Check the brand claim, not just the brand name

A product title can say anything. If a listing carries a well-known brand name, look for the brand's own details on the page — batch codes, official packaging, the manufacturer's stated ingredients or specifications. If the page names a famous brand but the description could apply to any generic product, treat the brand name as decoration.
